Arm Reduction

Arm Lift

What is arm reduction or lift?

This is an operation that removes the excessive folds of skin and fat on the inner aspects of the arms. You can easily demonstrate this by raising both arms outstretched like wings. The folds of excessive skin and fat can be seen hanging down.

Who requests an arm reduction or lift?

This is requested by people who have excessive fold of skin and fat in the inner aspect of the arms. There is commonly a complaint that the arms are ‘flabby’ or ‘wobbly’.

Did you know!

There is a minimal access arm lift or reduction which is a combination of liposuction and excision of skin in the armpit leaving a hidden scar in the armpit

What kind of anaesthetic?

This surgery is usually performed under general anaesthetic.

How long will I stay in hospital?

It is usually for a night. It can also be done as a day case.

How long am I off work?

It is usually for a couple of weeks.

How long will the operation will take?

It depends on the size but usually for about 1 ½ - 2 hours.

Where will the scars be?

The amount of skin and fat to be excised is usually planned pre-operatively in such a way that the scar lies on the inner aspect of the arm.

It can either be a horizontal scar in the armpit or a ‘T’-shaped scar (with the transverse or horizontal part of the ‘T’ in the armpits).

How long will I wear the special garments after the operation?

The supportive or pressure garments are usually worn for a period of four to six weeks to help make the arm more comfortable and reduce the amount of overall swelling.

What are the problems that may occur after arm reduction or lift?

General problems that can arise with any surgery can occur including haematoma (collection of blood) which may require drainage, infection, small areas of superficial wound breakdown which requires simple dressings, bad scar (stretched or raised), puckering at the ends of the scars, called ‘dog ears’, which may require revision at a later stage.

Occasionally there may be some fluid collection which may need to be drained.

There can be changes in sensation in the inner aspect of the forearm. With time most patients don’t find this bothersome.

All these and any concerns will be fully discussed during your consultation.
